Lance Armstrong's LIVESTRONG Bracelets

Lance Armstrong's LiveStrong Bracelet started this whole recent trend of rubber bracelet mania. The yellow LiveStrong bracelets were launched in the Summer of 2004 coinciding with Lance going for his 6th and record-breaking Tour de France win. As we now know, he won. Go Lance!

Initially Nike and Lance teamed up on the Livestrong wristband project with Nike donating $1 Million dollars to the Lance Armstrong Foundation which supports people struggling with cancer. The goal was to raise $5 million more with the sale of the Livestrong rubber wristbands, which they modeled after the Nike Baller Id Band bracelets. At last count over $30 million dollars had been raised through the sale of the bracelets, far exceeding anyone's expectations.

Lance appeared on the Oprah Winfrey show on February 11 2005 giving his first public interview with his girlfriend musician Sheryl Crow. He talked about the immense success of the Livestrong wristband campaign and Oprah issued a challenge to her viewers to exceed the previous daily sales record of the bracelets which was about 300,000. The Oprah viewers responded by buying 900,000 bracelets in one day and the back order was again put in to effect on the popular bracelets.

There is no telling how much money will be generated by this campaign, or how long the trend will last. It has spurred a veritable revolution of rubber bracelet wearing which has inspired many other charities and organizations in their fundraising efforts.
